“My big break was photographing The Afghan Girl in 1984 in a refugee camp in Pakistan, that changed my life.” Steve McCurry told NPR in a 2015 interview. There is no doubt that McCurry’s most famous photo is of The Afghan Girl that appeared on the 1984 cover of National Geographic. McCurry started his path to fame at the age of 19, when he took a year trip traveling through Europe. During this time, he decided that traveling seeing new places and the world was the most fulfilling thing he could be doing. The next step was to attend the College of Arts and Architecture at Pennsylvania State where McCurry graduated cum laude (honors). He spent the next couple years of his life working for a paper but already knew his real ambitions was to be working around the world. Two years after being hired by the paper McCurry left, and traveled to India with his camera and learned how to wait until people forgot the camera was even present. Maybe not as famous as The Afghan Girl McCurry still was awarded the Robert Capa Gold Medals for best Photographic Reporting when, in native garbs, he crossed the border into Afghanistan from Pakistan just before the Russian invasion 1979. McCurry received first at World Press Photo contest twice and he was awarded Magazine Photographer of the year by the National Press Photographers Association.

McCurry, has now visited six of the seven continents, traveled to India about ninety times, taken photos of civil conflicts in Cambodia, Beirut, the Philippines, Tibet, among others, and successfully published eight books. Many would consider him to be at the pinnacle of his entire professional field, but rather, McCurry doesn’t see his life now different than that of twenty years ago, instead it’s just a continuation of that.
